Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy is ideal for all patients who need to gain strength and endurance, improve balance and reduce pain. Water has wonderful and unique properties that make exercising in water ideal for patients who are not able to exercise on land or who would benefit from aquatic exercise along with their land-based exercise.
Aquatic exercise reduces the effects of gravity. Standing in shoulder level water reduces 80% of the weight on the legs and back which helps reduce the compression on the joints and allows a patient to move and walk with greater ease. The pressure of the warm water also helps increase circulation.
A patient does not need to know how to swim to participate in aquatic therapy because a physical or occupational therapist will be in the pool during the treatment session. Stairs and a lift chair allow easy access into the pool for patients with limitations.
Conditions that would benefit from aquatic therapy include:
- Arthritis
- Orthopedic injuries
- Sports injuries
- Fibromyalgia
- Stroke
- Joint replacements
- Pediatric developmental delay
- Chronic pain
- Low back pain
- Shoulder and neck problems
- Gait and balance disorders
- Postoperative patients
