Aquatic Therapy

Water has wonderful and unique properties that make it an ideal exercise setting for many types of patients. Aquatic physical therapy is a great option for patients who are not able to participate in exercise on land, as well as for those who can participate in an exercise program that combines water- and land-based activities.

The indoor therapeutic pool is maintained at 92 degrees for patients’ comfort, and to encourage movement and exercise. To help put patients at ease in the water, physical therapists and physical therapy assistants are available to provide one-on-one assistance. The stairs and lift chair help patients easily and safely enter and exit the pool.

How Does Aquatic Therapy Help?

Water helps reduce the effects of gravity to allow increased movement and range of motion. Less pressure on the joints and spine makes exercise easier and less painful.

The pressure of the water against the body can help reduce swelling, increase circulation and enhance cardiovascular endurance.

Warm water allows muscles to relax, which helps reduce muscle tension and spasms, as well as decrease pain associated with movement. It can also increase blood flow to injured areas to assist in healing.

Working against the water’s movement to keep the body stable helps improve balance and core muscle control.

Why Choose Memorial?

Each member of the dedicated staff is committed to delivering the remarkable brand of patient- and family-centered care that sets Memorial apart from other healthcare providers. The staff has many years of experience, and extensive continuing education and training in aquatic physical therapy. The focus is on providing individualized care and treatment that meets each patient’s needs.

All patients are first evaluated on land by a licensed physical therapist. If aquatic physical therapy is a good choice, the patient receives individualized treatment in the pool with a licensed and registered physical therapist or physical therapist assistant. Patients also receive instructions for a home exercise program, enabling them to continue their aquatic exercise on their own.
